Mudcats games canceled following bus crash in Columbus County

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A series of games scheduled between the Carolina Mudcats and Myrtle Beach Pelicans have been canceled following the Mudcats’ bus crash in Columbus County.

The crash happened in the early morning hours Tuesday at Clarendon Chadbourn Road. Columbus County Emergency Services spokeswoman Kaye Worley says about 33 people were on the bus. Troopers say the driver was exceeding a safe speed when the bus rolled at a curve. Several players were treated and released from the hospital Tuesday. The team left to head to Myrtle Beach Tuesday afternoon.

Carolina League President John Hopkins issued the following statement:

“For reasons related to Tuesday morning’s bus wreck, the series between the Carolina Mudcats and Myrtle Beach Pelicans will not be played as scheduled. The three-game series was to begin Tuesday and continue through Thursday at Myrtle Beach’s TicketReturn.com Field. Decisions on rescheduling will be made at a later time.”
