Myrtle Grove Middle School collects over 6,200 food items for food pantry

Myrtle Grove Middle School is overflowing with food! Through the school’s Food for Fines campaign, students donated over 6,200 non-perishable food items last week to benefit the local food pantry, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. The food drive was organized by MGMS’ librarian, Jennifer LaGarde, as a way for students to omit their library book fines. For each item donated, a library fine was cleared, though the majority of the food was donated by students who wanted to participate in the food drive.

“We are very excited about by the outpouring of food that our students have so willingly donated. It’s a great display of our school spirit and how our students understand the importance of community outreach,” said Principal Robin Meiers. “It’s always a great day at the ‘Grove, and we hope these food items will help those less fortunate have a great day, too.”

MGMS will be delivering the food items to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard on Thursday, May 13th. Myrtle Grove gators will begin loading a bus to deliver the food at 11:00 a.m. Mrs. LaGarde and a group of students will depart at 11:30 a.m. for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. While there, students will have an opportunity to tour the facility and learn more about Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard and how food items are distributed to those in need.
