N.C. man accused of impersonating dead mother to collect benefits

DETROIT (AP) — A federal complaint is accusing a North Carolina man of impersonating his dead mother to collect more than $222,000 in benefits from a county employee retirement system in Michigan.

Craig Munro of Matthews faces a possible 20-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted of mail fraud for taking money from the Wayne County Employees Retirement System.

Munro hasn't been arraigned. His case likely will be transferred to federal court in North Carolina.

His father was a county civil engineer who died in 1989. His mother received survivor benefits until her death in 1996. Her son continued to collect money until May 2006, according to the complaint filed this week in US District Court.
