N Topsail homeowners settle on condemned homes

Owners of some condemned homes in North Topsail Beach finally have the pay day they have been fighting for.

After three years of legal battles, about a dozen home owners will share nearly $1.6 million dollars.

The town will pay about $800,000. The town’s insurance company will pick up the rest.

The homes were condemned in 2005 after the town deemed them unlivable.

North Topsail resident Jim Silverthorne said, “My heart goes out to those people out there and I’m very sorry, and I hope some compensation can help them get relocated or whatever.”

Town officials would not return phone calls about the settlement. We did reach Board of Alderman ember Robert Swantek who would only say “it’s a done deal.”
