NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The NAACP has responded to a recent study identifying a gap between black and white students in the New Hanover County School District.

The report was conducted by the organization, “Elevate Every Child.”

The group’s report states 76% of white New Hanover County students were proficient in 3rd to 12th grade test compared to 30% of Black students.

“We’re not necessarily looking at it from a deficit lens. We’re looking at it from a lens of support.” said Kemeka Sidbury, the education chair of the New Hanover County branch of the NAACP.

Sidbury says the report uses proficiency data from the state Department of Public Instruction after a process of review, verification, validation, and authentication.

“Compulsory school attendance laws and the great expenditures for education both demonstrate our recognition of the importance of education to our democratic society,” said LeRon Montgomery, president of the New Hanover County branch of the NAACP. “It is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education.”
