National group is raising money for NC battlefield
BENTONVILLE, N.C. (AP) – A national preservation group is
raising money to add to the North Carolina site of the Civil War’s
last major battle.
The Civil War Preservation Trust hopes to buy about 240 acres
around the site in the Johnston County community of Bentonville.
That would be an expansion of nearly 20 percent to the
state-managed site. The 1865 battlefield covers about 6,000 acres.
The trust hopes its 55,000 members will donate a large chunk of
the money for the state campaign.
Bentonville is the largest Civil War battlefield in North
Carolina and was the site of the last major battle of the war, with
more than 80,000 troops fighting.
