Navassa contamination deeper than expected

NAVASSA, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — Environmental experts told Navassa residents Tuesday that creosote has been found as deep as 78 feet underground at the Kerr-McGee Superfund site.

Tasha Lewis, a Greenfield Environmental Trust portfolio manager assigned to the Navassa site, told the 60 people in attendance at Mount Calvary AME Church that the 78-foot bore had been drilled Tuesday.

“As we continue to collect more data, we will be able to determine, is this the same boundary (of contamination)? Is it larger and is it deeper?” Lewis said. “We already know it’s 78 feet. That’s deeper than we expected, based on the information we had in the past.”
