NC DHHS: First flu death reported

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — State health officials confirm an elementary school-aged child in the central part of the state died from complications of an influenza infection.

To protect the family’s privacy, health officials did not release any additional information other than the child was at a higher risk for complications from the flu because of underlying medical conditions.

“We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family on their loss,” said State Health Director Robin Cummings, M.D. “We hope that making people aware of this tragic case will encourage preventative measures and remind everyone that it is not too early to be vaccinated. We are very early in the flu season and we expect to see flu activity increase in the coming weeks and months.”

Health officials urge citizens to keep hands washed, cover coughs and sneezes, stay home if ill and get a flu shot.
