NC GOP legislators promise more transparency

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Republicans who took over the North Carolina Legislature in January promised a more open process and to avoid working out the budget behind closed doors.

After several weeks in power, GOP leaders have tried to follow through on that pledge by making changes designed to promote transparency. The House decided to give its members two days to review the final budget bill to ensure they understood what’s inside. The Senate eliminated a way for lawmakers to avoid voting when present.

House Republicans took criticism last month when they held private caucus meetings on topics that had all the markings of legislative committees. Speaker Thom Tillis defended the gatherings as lawful.

Senate Minority Leader Martin Nesbitt said tests to openness will come with the GOP’s handling of the budget and redistricting.
