NC lawmakers agree to halt bag ban after storms
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina lawmakers have suspended a
plastic bag ban for the Outer Banks to help a grocery store chain
whose distribution center was destroyed by last weekend’s deadly
tornadoes.
The General Assembly sent to Gov. Beverly Perdue on Tuesday a
bill that would put on hold the ban on the ubiquitous shopping bags
along the strip of barrier islands. Rep. David Lewis of Harnett
County said the bill is designed to help Food Lion after it lost
its supply of paper bags from damage to its Dunn center.
Lewis said the bill is supported by Gov. Beverly Perdue. The
suspension would go until June 30, or earlier if Perdue decides the
supply chain has been restored.
Senate leader Phil Berger said the Legislature is willing to
approve other storm-related legislation.
