NC says it’s making plans to comply with law

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s deputy senior attorney general says the state is putting together plans to comply with an appeals court ruling that restores same-day registration and counting out-of-precinct ballots for the fall election.

Alexander Peters told U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Schroeder on Tuesday the state will handle parts of same-day registration by hand instead of computer.

Schroeder last week issued a preliminary injunction to comply with a ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals – a decision cheered by civil rights groups who sued over a 2013 elections law backed by North Carolina’s Republican leaders.

The injunction means both provisions have been set aside- at least for now. State attorneys have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene so the provisions can be implemented.
