NC senators work Wednesday, leave town as storm approaches

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The North Carolina Senate wrapped up its work for the week a day early to avoid any encounters with an approaching winter storm. But it stuck around longer than the House.

Senators conducted more than two hours of floor debate Wednesday – including votes on a marriage-recusal bill for magistrates and register of deeds workers – and held one committee before leaving Raleigh. Senate leader Phil Berger said there would be a no-vote session Friday in keeping with state law but that work will resume Monday.

The House passed one bill Tuesday before closing up shop. Speaker Tim Moore said it made no sense to remain in town given the slippery roads and an impending storm.

It’s the second consecutive week the legislature has been waylaid by winter weather.
