NC state Controller McCoy to retire

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina State Controller David McCoy is retiring from his job at the end of the month in a move that will end a public service career spanning more than 30 years.

McCoy told office staff of his decision Monday morning, citing what he called a number of health and family issues he did not detail. He’ll leave more than a year before his seven-year appointment was scheduled to expire. McCoy’s state government career includes being transportation secretary in Gov. Jim Hunt’s administration and state budget director for Gov. Mike Easley.

Current Gov. Pat McCrory will name McCoy’s replacement. The General Assembly must confirm it.

The controller is charged with keeping the state’s books, monitoring cash flow and managing state payroll. McCoy held the job during strenuous fiscal times.
