NC State researchers to reveal homeowner’s GenX tap water results

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–NC State researchers will present the initial tap water results from the GenX exposure study at a meeting on Tuesday night.

Researchers will discuss the findings for tap water samples taken from nearly 200 homes of New Hanover County residents who volunteered to participate in the study.

Researchers will also be available to answer questions from participants and the public.

Little is known about how long GenX and related chemicals will remain in the environment, how they are stored in the body, or their toxicity.

The GenX exposure study aims to address these questions.

In November, lead researcher Jane Hoppin and her team recruited New Hanover County residents who agreed to give blood, urine and tap water samples for analysis. Participants received their individual water test results via letter last week.

Blood and urine testing is underway and those results will be shared first with individual participants and then with the larger community when they become available.

Hoppin and NC State co-researchers Detlef Knappe and Nadine Kotlarz will present the results. The meeting is hosted by Cape Fear River Watch.

It will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at UNC Wilmington’s Lumina Theater.

The meeting is free, but tickets are required. They are available at Sharky’s box office, located outside Lumina Theater on Hamilton Drive. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
