NC town to drop flea to usher in New Year

EASTOVER, NC (AP) — More and more communities try to drop something to usher in the New Year. In the eastern North Carolina town of Eastover, they’ve decided to drop a flea. Not just any flea, of course, a roughly 3-foot-tall, 30-pound flea made of fabric, foam, wire and wood.

Mayor Charles McLaurin told The Fayetteville Observer officials decided to drop the flea from a pole on Flea Hill to attract attention to the Cumberland County town of 4,000 people incorporated all the way back in 2007.

The ceremony will include a storyteller recounting the legend of Flea Hill just before midnight. An Eastover native wrote nearly 50 years ago that Flea Hill was infested with the pests. There also will be a contest to name the flea.
