NC wildlife officers to watch for impaired boaters

WILMINGTON, NC (AP) — Officers with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission are patrolling the state’s southeastern waterways and channels as part of an operation designed to educate boaters about the dangers of drinking while out on the water.

The StarNews reports that Operation Dry Water is in its fourth year and is a nationwide campaign. The operation is similar to the N.C. Highway Patrol’s ‘Click It or Ticket’ program.

Officers will be patrolling the water throughout the weekend, conducting routine safety checks while also monitoring for boaters who might have had too much to drink.

A conviction for operating a boat under the influence can include a fine of up to $1,000 and possible jail time.
