NC authorities look for human skull found in river

EDENTON, N.C. — Authorities are searching a coastal North Carolina river for a human skull that fishermen said was attached to a crabpot but couldn’t be found when police arrived.

The Virginian-Pilot reported Thursday a fisherman told police he was checking crabpots last week in the Chowan River and saw what looked like a skull attached to one. He dropped the boxy wire trap back in the river and called authorities, but it was gone when the pot was pulled up again.

Chowan County Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin says divers have used underwater cameras to search the murky water where the river flows into the Albemarle Sound. The sheriff said the skull could be a person missing in a nearby county since March or from one of the ancient Indian burial sites along the river.
