NC Capitol to get $600,000 renovation

RALEIGH — A project to improve the walkways around the state Capitol will begin this month and last about 90 days.

Officials said Monday the project will begin in mid-November after federal funds are approved. The project will focus on leveling walkways to improve accessibility to the square around the building.

Eighty percent of the $600,000 project cost is being paid with federal funds.

Visitors to the Capitol will enter on the west side during the project.

The Capitol was completed in 1840, and is a National Historic Landmark. The building housed all of state government until 1888,and the Legislature met there until 1961.

Although the governor still has an office in the building, the Capitol is largely maintained as a historical and tourist site.
