NC county commission to discuss domestic partners
CHARLOTTE — One commissioner says the topic is “icky,” but that sentiment isn’t stopping one North Carolina county’s elected leaders from discussing domestic partner benefits.
The Charlotte Observer reports that the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners has the topic on its planning retreat agenda for the first time in four years. The retreat starts Thursday.
Commissioners aren’t expected to vote on whether to change the county’s benefits policy.
Commissioner Bill James called the topic “icky” and said in an e-mail that the county has no business discussing it. James said state laws make homosexual relationships illegal.
Chairwoman Jennifer Roberts said the county must offer a benefits package that is fair and competitive.
