RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Tom Fetzer has told state GOP leaders he’s stepping down as North Carolina Republican Party chairman in mid-January.
A member of the state GOP’s central committee said Fetzer announced his decision at a committee meeting Saturday morning. Rep. David Lewis told The Associated Press that Fetzer said he would resign effective Jan. 15.
Lewis said the party’s executive committee would choose Fetzer’s replacement the same day. The successor likely would be up for re-election at the party’s annual meeting in June.
The announcement comes three weeks after Republicans wrested control of both chambers from the Democrats and US Sen. Richard Burr easily won re-election.
Fetzer is a former Raleigh mayor and political consultant who was elected chairman in June 2009.
