NC preservation group buys 413 acres
WINSTON-SALEM — A North Carolina preservation group says it’s buying 413 acres that include the highest point in Surry County.
The Piedmont Land Conservancy said Monday it bought the land that includes Fisher Peak to give it permanent protection. The Winston-Salem Journal reported the site is where the Blue Ridge Parkway extends to the North Carolina and Virginia state line.
The purchase protects an area that contains the headwaters of 13 streams that drain into the Fisher River. The largest streams are thought to contain native brook trout. The conservancy will work with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to confirm the presence of the trout.
The land reaches an altitude of about 3,300 feet and is filled with dense thickets of mountain laurel and is home to bears.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
