NCDOT recommends sponsoring highway clean-up

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A study by the N.C. Board of Transportation is suggesting sponsorship for highway litter removal and rest areas, as well as increasing certain fees as a means of easing the burden on taxpayer funds for services it provides.

The recommendations were released on Wednesday after the NCDOT study which was directed by the N.C. General Assembly.

Included in the recommendations was a call for implementing or increasing some fees for current NCDOT services including traffic analysis and inspections, and some additional costs for outdoor advertising.

The recommendations are expected to serve as a basis for policy deliberations by lawmakers regarding the balance between public funding of infrastructure and user fee-based service.

According to the agency, in many cases, NCDOT doesn’t collect enough in fees to cover services.
