WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Portions of a shipwreck from 1919 are now visible again in Surf City.
In 2012, beach erosion from Hurricane Sandy first unearthed a section of the William H. Sumner, a three-masted schooner that ran ashore in Surf City nearly 100 years ago. The schooner was sailing from Puerto Rico to New York when it went down.
The remains of the schooner are visible once again, during low tide. More portions of the shipwreck peek out of the sand than before.
