Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard speaks at UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Christo Brand, who was Nelson Mandela’s prison guard, spoke at  UNCW today.

Brand’s visit comes as part of a tour to promote his book, “Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend.” Brand was 18 years old when Nelson Mandela was sentenced to prison in 1962. During the 12 years Brand served as a guard, the two developed a unique friendship.

Brand wrote the book to share memories of his longtime friend.

“I want to show readers about humanity between two different people and they also can see Mandela’s legacy and see how studies were important in his life,” said Brand.

Brand will speak again at 6 p.m. this evening in UNCW’s Morton Hall.
