Nesting numbers drop for some shore birds

There is concern over the shore-bird population here in southeastern North Carolina.

Tallies from this year show that nesting numbers for certain birds have declined by as much as thirteen percent since 2004.

A spokesman from the local Audubon Society attributed the decline to habitat loss which he said comes from over-development of beach areas. He also said trash from people building on vacant lots also attracts predators like foxes, raccoons and opossums. He said people aren’t entirely to blame. But some species might soon be endangered if these trends continue.
