New business brewing in Brunswick Co.

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — A new business has something brewing in Brunswick County. The Check Six Brewing Company is ready to begin manufacturing and selling craft beer in Southport. It’s the only craft beer brewery in town.

This brewing business started out as a hobby for founders Noah Goldman and Air Force pilot Tim Hassel.

“We did it in a basement,” Goldman said. “We’ve got pictures of us doing it outside when its snowing we just like making beer.”

They took their basement hobby in New Jersey to a new scale – a brewery in Brunswick County.

“People’s tastes change and this is a hugely growing market,” Hassel said. “And to find a jewel like Southport in Brunswick County that doesn’t have this capability is great.”

Southport will be the home to the only craft brewery in the county. It’s an industry economic officials are trying to attract.

“It’s a venue people can call their own, we want to be a part of the fabric of Southport,” Hassel said.

Chamber of commerce officials said it’s becoming an ideal place to start a business because not only residents but visitors both support local businesses.

“So it’s just kind of a great little community to open your business and really prosper,” Karen Sphar, the vice president of the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce.

As officials work to attract more brewing businesses to the county, Goldman says he supports it.

“Our beers are going to be different to somebody else, so if somebody else moved down here I’d be happy to help them get started. We can collaborate,” Goldman said.

The brewery hopes to be open in the next few weeks. They plan to start brewing tomorrow.
