New CFCC parking deck is also art gallery

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Students will see more than cars in Cape Fear Community College’s new parking deck. They can also check out a new art gallery.

The first floor of the Hanover Street parking deck will feature original pieces from CFCC students. The gallery was created as a way to meet a City of Wilmington ordinance that requires a certain percentage of the deck be used as retail space.

The chair of CFCC’s Humanities and Fine Arts Departments, Frank Carter, says this is an answer to a prayer.

“The truth is we’ve never had a place to display all of our art or even some of our art at one time,” Carter said. “This is great, because we don’t have to use hallways, we don’t have to use elevator towers, we don’t have to go downtown and rent space and we don’t have to beg retail establishments to let us hang art in there.”

Eventually, the college will allow other local artists to rent the space for their own exhibits.

The ribbon cutting to open the new parking deck and art gallery is Friday at 3 p.m.
