NEW DETAILS: Boil Water Advisory continues for parts of Boiling Spring Lakes area

BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Public Utilities customers in the Boiling Spring Lakes area experiencing low water pressure and outages and are under a Boil Water Advisory.

According to a spokeswoman, the advisory was issued Tuesday night after a temporary outage at the Bell Swamp Booster Pump Station.

“When something happens like this, we try our best to get the word out as quickly an efficiently as possible,” spokesperson Amanda Hutcheson said. “It may not have happened yesterday in exactly the same way that people have been used to recently because yesterday was not expected or planned.”

Several schools in the area are also under the advisory, and that officials are implementing the school system’s standard boil water plan. Some parents say the schools should be closed, but school spokesperson Jessica Swencki says safety is their primary focus.

“We really have been operating as business as usual with the exception of the two hour delay due to weather this morning but that actually just allowed us additional time to prep today for having the bottles water in place and things of that nature,” Swencki said. “We are 100 percent confident that our schools are opening, they are safe and all of the conditions are sanitary.”

Late Wednesday afternoon, officials said equipment failure this morning caused pressure to be lost again in the water lines. Samples of the water have been taken for testing to ensure safety and quality of drinking water. The test results are expected to come back Thursday afternoon.

Both Brunswick County Public Utilities and the Division of Water Resources advises that when water is restored, consumers boil all water used for human consumption. This includes boiling before drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.

The advisory remains in effect until further notice.
