NEW DETAILS: Captured inmate’s jailhouse call released

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — The inmate accused of escaping the Brunswick County Jail and family members accused of hiding him, appeared in court Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has released a recording of a call investigators say William Hewett made to his girlfriend and mother before his escape describing his plans.

Hewett escaped from jail Thursday afternoon after posing as his brother, who was also in jail. He was captured Tuesday morning at his family’s compound in Southport.

In the recording released by the Sheriff’s Office, Hewett is heard telling his girlfriend and mother than when jailers call his brother to be released, he planned to go up instead. Investigators say that’s exactly what he did.

Also in the call, Hewett said he was doing it so he could come home and be with his pregnant girlfriend, who he asked to give him one last chance. Hewett broke down crying as he told his mother how much he loved the girl. Neither woman is heard telling Hewett not to escape. His mother does ask about Hewett leaving his brother Curtis in jail to pose as him. Hewett says the jail will have to let Curtis go, too. Instead, Curtis Hewett is now being held under $750,000 for aiding and abetting William’s escape.

In court this morning, Hewett appeared before a judge while shackled to a chair, surrounded by law enforcement, including Sheriff John Ingram. Hewett’s bond remains at $3 million. He’s now facing two felony charges and one misdemeanor charge.

Hewett’s accused family members appeared after his hearing. Katherine Hewett Carter (mother), Earl Carter (stepfather), Caitlin Moyer (girlfriend) and Audrey Thompson (family friend) all remain in jail under a $1.5 million bond. Robert Hewett (cousin) and Tanna Hewett (aunt) had their bonds reduced to $1 million.

In a news conference Monday, Sheriff Ingram said more staff members would be disciplined following the escape. Hewett was able to escape the jail without going through several security protocols. That internal investigation continues.
