NEW DETAILS: Delivery driver facing charges in fatal hit-and-run
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man accused of a hit-and-run crash that left a Wilmington man dead over the weekend made his first court appearance today.
While driving a delivery car for Asian restaurant the Paper Crane police say Richard Pait, 24, hit and killed Thomas Kramek, 58, and left the scene.
Investigators say Kramek was pushing a shopping cart across the 200 block of Military Cutoff Rd. Saturday night when Pait hit him.
Pait’s coworkers at the Paper Crane would not go on camera for an interview, but they said the night of the accident he came back into work knowing he hit something, but seemingly unaware that it was a person. They also said when Pait heard the news of a hit-and-run, he turned himself in. He was put in jail under a $20,000 bond, but he bonded out overnight.
He made his first appearance at the New Hanover County Courthouse Tuesday. His charges include leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury or death, which is a felony charge.
He will be back in court Nov. 6.
