New Hanover Co. Commission approves land purchase for new school

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Commissioners have approved letting the school district spend more than $1.6 million to buy land for a new school.

The nearly 18-acre site at 202 Edgewater Club Road in the Porters Neck area will be the home of the new Northeast Elementary School. Commissioners approved the $1,617,300 purchase unanimously this morning.

Construction of the school is one of the 14 priority projects to be funded through the $160 million school bond voters approved earlier this month.

According to New Hanover County Schools’ plans for the bond money, construction would start in early 2016 and be done by summer 2017. For the 2017 and 2018 school years, the new school will house Blair Elementary School, which will be replaced. The new Blair and Northeast, which will be based on the same design as Castle Hayne Elementary, will open in August 2019.

In July commissioners approved spending $782,677 for the design of the new school.
