New Hanover Co. Commissioners considering adding green space to park for $3.8M

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Commissioners are considering adding some more green space to a New Hanover County park.

Commissioners are looking at purchasing 85 acres that border Smith Creek Park off of Gordon Road. The price for the land is nearly $4 million and would be funded by a 2006 green space bond referendum.

“It’s going to be a great asset to our community once it’s all said and done,” said Jonathan Barfield, the New Hanover County Commission Chair. “I got one call today from one of our area residents thanking me and thanking the board of commissioners for even attempting to go down that road and recognizing it’s going to be a great park in the area.”

If approved, planned amenities include a trail system with learning center, exhibits and amphitheater.
