New Hanover County drowning remains under investigation

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) – What caused a man to become distressed in waters along Wrightsville Beach remains unknown.

Wrightsville Beach Fire Chief Glen Rogers tells WWAY lifeguards at Stand 6 south of Johnnie Mercer’s Pier noticed a swimmer in distress just at 11:00 Saturday morning.

The lifeguards attempted a rescue, but the swimmer was unconscious by the time they reached him according to Rogers. The swimmer was in his 50’s and visiting the beach with family according to the Chief.

Lifeguards performed CPR on the victim until EMS arrived. The victim was pronounced dead en route to the hospital according to Rogers.

Rogers adds the investigation into this latest drowning remains an open case.
