New Hanover County official gives update on winter storm’s effect on the area

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County received between 8 to 10 inches of snow in some places, according to new information from county officials.

Even with the sun coming out on Sunday and melting some of the snow and ice, most people stayed off the roads unless travel was necessary.

Any moisture on roadways will refreeze, creating dangerous black ice conditions.

Senior emergency management specialist Jason Fuller said county leaders use any information learned from storms like this to help guide decision-making for the next big storm.

“Road closures because it’s such a transient thing that can get better or worse very quickly have historically been a hard thing to track,” Fuller said. “We’ve really been working hard to nail down a good process for not only how to track those road closures, but how to communicate that out to the partners who can make a difference as far as clearing the roads.”

New Hanover County government offices are closed on Monday, with another briefing planned for 4:30 pm.
