RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — A New Hanover County sailor and longtime mentor is among nine North Carolinians recently inducted into the state’s highest civilian honor, recognizing decades of athletic achievement and community service.

On Thursday, Gov. Josh Stein presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine to recipients whose contributions have left a lasting impact across the state.

Among those honored was Martin Willard of New Hanover County, a competitive sailor and sailing instructor based in Wrightsville Beach. Willard has spent more than 50 years in the sport, earning four top-10 finishes in World Championship regattas and mentoring generations of local sailors.

In addition to his accomplishments on the water, Willard has been active in environmental and conservation efforts, including involvement with the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust and the North Carolina Coastal Federation.

“These exceptional North Carolinians have excelled in sports and, beyond their wins, demonstrated deep commitment to their communities,” Stein said during the presentation. “I am honored to recognize them today for their athletic excellence and community contributions. We are proud to celebrate their success.”

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is one of the state’s most prestigious honors, awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to North Carolina through service, leadership, and achievement.

Willard’s induction highlights both his longstanding role in the state’s sailing community and his continued commitment to preserving North Carolina’s coastal environment.
