WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Junior striker Katrina Guillou and sophomore midfielder Kennedy Ulrich each scored two goals to power UNCW to a 7-0 shutout victory over regional rival Coastal Carolina in the final game of the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational Monday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks, who breezed past Francis Marion, 8-0, in their tourney opener on Saturday, won their second straight and fifth in six games to push their record to 4-3-0 on the season. The Chanticleers fell to 3-5-0 this fall.

UNCW won the tournament crown after shutting out Francis Marion and Coastal Carolina by a combined score of 15-0. Ulrich was named Offensive MVP of the four-team event and UNCW senior defender Allye Mertes was selected Defensive MVP. Guillou and Moa Jarl joined Ulrich and Mertes on the All-Tournament Team.

Guillou got the scoring started for the Seahawks early in the contest when she slipped past the defense and flipped a shot over the head of CCU goalkeeper Faith Farley into the goal at 7:27. After Jarl connected on her first goal of the campaign at 10:21, Guillou added another tally at 14:29 with a penalty kick conversion.

Ulrich then got into the act with back-to-back goals to increase the score to 5-0. The native of Alberta, Canada, took possession in the midfield and connected from 16 yards out on her first score at 57:17 and found the net again 94 seconds later to pad the cushion.

Junior forward Jenna Baratta scored her first career goal on a penalty kick at 79:07 as the score ballooned to 6-0 and junior midfielder Greyson Ray closed out the scoring when she deflected in a cross at 82:15. Savannah Andrews collected an assist on the final score.

Coastal Carolina had two red cards issued during the match. Farley, CCU’s starting goalie, was ejected after taking down Guillou in the penalty area and senior defender Maddie Phillips was sent off at 79:07.

The Seahawks close out a three-game homestand Friday when longtime rival East Carolina visits the UNCW Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. match.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — UNCW women’s soccer freshman Serenity Waters exploded for a hat track in the first half of Saturday’s 8-0 romp over Francis Marion, earning the newcomer from Sharpsburg, Ga., Colonial Athletic Association’s Rookie-of-the-Week accolades.

Waters, a midfielder, entered the game with one goal in five starts this season, but shocked the Patriots with her three-goal outburst early in Saturday’s victory.

“It’s exciting for any player to score a hat trick and I’m happy for Serenity,” said veteran UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. “When goals are scored in our game, it’s always the product of the whole team. One player gets the credit, of course, and I’m sure Serenity shares this accolade with our whole team.”

Waters is tied for second on the team with eight points on four goals and will try to add to that tonight when the Seahawks take on Coastal Carolina in the finale of the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — UNCW freshman defender Brayden Smith made the most of his first career start as he assisted on the game-winning goal in UNCW’s 2-1 win over nationally ranked South Carolina last week.

“Brayden played with a maturity beyond his years in his first full collegiate start against South Carolina,” said UNCW head coach Aidan Heaney. “He showed how well he reads the game and anticipates situations, and is also very composed in possession. He also contributed to a goal, so pleased for him and the impact he had for our team.”

Smith made his first career starts against the Gamecocks and just his second career appearance and responded with a well-rounded game. In addition to assisting on the game-winner, Smith also helped the UNCW defense limit USC to just five shots and one corner kick on the night.

On the game-winner, Smith corralled a failed clear by USC on a corner kick. He fired a shot that was blocked and deflected to Jamie Dell, who drilled his second game-winner of the season and the fifth of his career.

The Seahawks trailed early, 1-0, in the ninth minute before shutting down the Gamecocks the rest of the way. It was UNCW’s first win against USC since the early 1980’s.

UNCW continues its daunting road stretch on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. start against undefeated and 25th-ranked Campbell. The game will be streamed and accessible through UNCWsports.com.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — After setting a career-high with 34 digs versus Campbell and averaging 5.73 digs per set for the week, UNCW’s Morgan Owney was named Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player-of-the-Week on Monday.

Owney helped the Seahawks to a 3-1 week with wins over Campbell, Davidson and High Point as UNCW has bolted out to a 9-2 record to start the season.

“Morgan is gaining more and more confidence with each match and her aggressive effort on the court certainly enhances our speed of play and energy on the court,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek.

Against Campbell, Owney collected 12 digs in the first set alone, and finished with her career-high of 34. That total ranks amongst the top-10 in the nation this season and is second all-time on UNCW’s single match records list.

Owney, a sophomore from Elizabeth City, N.C., committed just three reception errors and fielded 96.7 percent of her receptions cleanly.

In addition to her solid defensive efforts, Owney also handed out a career-high six assists against Campbell and doled out 19 assists for the week.

Owney moved up to fourth in the CAA averaging 4.10 digs per set on the season while the Seahawks top the conference at 16.48 digs per set.

Owney joins teammate Meredith Peacock as Seahawks to earn the league’s Defensive Player-of-the-Week honor.

UNCW closes out its in-season tournament schedule this weekend when it travels to Blacksburg, Va., for the Hokie Invitational. The Seahawks will open with the host Hokies on Friday at 7 p.m. and close out their appearance with matches against Marshall and Radford on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. Please note, Saturday’s match with Marshall was changed to 12:30 p.m. because of a football game on the Virginia Tech campus.

HUNTINGTON, NC (APPALACHIAN STATE) — Senior Stanley Broaden netted his third career multi-goal game on Monday night to lift Appalachian State University men’s soccer over Marshall, 2-0. Broaden netted two multi-goal games last season against UNC Asheville (Sept. 6) and ETSU (Sept. 26).

Broaden also has scored the game-winning goal in back-to-back contests after scoring first in the shutout of Presbyterian on Sept. 12.

“To turn around and play on the road three days after our last game and to work as hard as we did and play as well as we did tonight shows how far this has come in the past 10 days,” said head coach Matt Nelson. “If you look at the performance, we were very good against a solid Marshall team and it is always great when the result mirrors the performance. I am proud of the team and now we can focus on our next game.”

The Mountaineers (2-3-1) have not allowed a goal in the last 180 minutes of play and once again dominated and kept possession in the attacking zone most of the night.

Appalachian got on the board first in the 56th minute when Alex Herbst played a tremendous through ball up the near side to Donovan Japp who was able to set up Broaden with a cross in front of the six-yard box for him to tap in for the early 1-0 lead.

Just six minutes later in the 62nd minute, Broaden tallied his second of the night on a long cross into the box from freshman Cooper Coughlin to extend the lead to 2-0.

App State outshot Marshall 15-7 in the match. Broaden led the Mountaineers in shots with six, including four on goal. Japp and Keegan Tanaka each collected three shots, while Herbst, Coughlin and Trey Hemphill added a shot a piece.

Paul West earned his second clean sheet of the season and the seventh of his career, while making two saves in the contest. West played the majority of the game against Prebyterian and shared the shutout with Holland Hammond last Friday.

The Mountaineers will have some time off before their next match on Wednesday, Sept. 24 against Radford. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. from Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
