New Hanover Library to host 3rd annual Fiction to Fashion Contest
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– A Wilmington event is enabling teens to get creative while giving old books a new life.
It’s called Fiction to Fashion, an annual event that challenges teens aged 13 to 18 to create outfits using discarded library books, cassette tapes, and CD’s.
The event, hosted by the New Hanover County Public Library, allows teenagers to practice their creativity, resourcefulness, and design skills.
Youth Services Librarian Scooter Hayes, who prefers to be referred to as “Mr. Scooter”, discussed how the contest repurposes materials that might otherwise be thrown away.
“The library gets a lot of book donations every day, and a lot of those donations go to our friends at the Library Book Sale. But some of them do get recycled and trashed, so we try to repurpose those stories in creative pieces of art that we can rock down the runway,” Hayes said.
The event has five categories: Most Avant Garde, Most Functional, Best Accessory, and Best Runway Swagger.
Two-time Avant Garde winner Bonnie Fawcett said that she hopes to take home a third win this year.
“It’s great. It’s so much fun to hang out with all of the other students and build really cool designs, and see what everyone else does,” Fawcett said.
Mr. Scooter says his favorite part of the program is watching ideas come to life on the runway.
“My favorite part is just seeing what the teens create. They put a lot of time and effort into it, and seeing these masterpieces just rule the runway, it’s just amazing what they can do,” Hayes said.
The event is scheduled for February 23rd at Expo 216. The registration deadline is January 31.
Interested participants are encouraged to register quickly, as more than half of the 25 spots have been filled.
