WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to grant a special-use permit for the expansion of the county’s landfill.
New Hanover produces more than 200,000 tons of garbage a year, and without the proposed expansion the landfill has a lifespan roughly five years. Officials said expanding it into a more than 200-acre space just off U.S. 421 will give the facility an estimated 45 years of additional life.
The board held a public hearing on the permit during the meeting and two residents spoke in favor of the expansion.
