WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — More companies will be given a chance to bid on a contract for hauling trash out of New Hanover County under a plan adopted by the board of commissioners Monday.
The county will put out a formal request for proposals (RFP) process in November, delaying the board’s earlier decision to give the contract to Raleigh-based Waste Industries after the legality of that proposed contract was questioned.
The county board voted 4-1 in early October – with Commissioner Jonathan Barfield dissenting – to enter into a contract with Waste Industries to build a transfer station and begin hauling waste to Sampson County. The board called it a “service contract,” which does not have to go through any sort of public notice or outside bidding process.
