New maps released for New Hanover County high school redistricting

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Schools have an idea of how they want to redistrict high schools.

They released new redrawn maps Wednesday.

The redistricting will move 685 students around the high schools.

This is still only a proposal and parents and the public can provide comment online.

Under the proposals more than 225 students would go from Ashley and New Hanover to Hoggard.

More than 240 would leave Laney High School and go to New Hanover High School.

New Hanover would take in the most with more than 340 going there.

The school district said this is a small move that will help overcrowded classes for years to come.

“The last time we redistricted high schools was 2001,” New Hanover County Schools Assistant Superintendent for Planning and Operations Eddie Anderson said. “I am pretty happy that we could make some relatively small shifts and achieve a long term solution. Since it’s been that long since we redistricted.”

The school board will receive public input on the proposed maps and high school redistricting plans at the work session scheduled for January 23, 2018.
