New permit for fumigation plant could bring higher methyl bromide levels

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A fumigation plant on Sunnyvale Drive will have new ownership and possibly a new permit.

TIMA Capital is taking over the Royal Pest Solutions facility and wants a Title V air permit. The Environment Protection Agency says, “Title V of the Clean Air Act requires major sources of air pollutants, and certain other sources, to obtain and operate in compliance with an operating permit.” The permit allows TIMA to release 90 tons of a chemical named Methyl Bromide. Currently, the plant releases 9 tons of the chemical.

“The current permit allows up to 9.9 tons. Once it crosses over 10, then it becomes a major facility and they need a Title V permit,” Division of Air Quality Deputy Director Michael Pjetraj said.

Pjetraj says the permit is under review and the facility needs to comply with all the applicable standards.

The state is accepting public comments for the permit until Sunday.
