New Hanover Co. superintendent to retire

New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Al Lerch is calling it a career. Lerch announced today he will retire at the end of the school year. He said he made the decision for personal reasons.

Lerch became the district’s interim superintendent in July 2007 after John Morris resigned. The school board gave the permanent position a month later.

Lerch has been with the school district since 1983. His last day will be june 30.
