New Hanover County Sheriff’s want ankle bracelets for domestic violence abusers

Right now, protective orders may be a victim’s only line of defense, but local law enforcement is trying to change that.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has applied for a grant to purchase ankle bracelets to track domestic violence abusers out of jail on pre-trial release.

The $160,000 grant would help buy ten monitoring devices that would pinpoint their exact location. If they get too close to the victim, police and the victim are alerted.

The sheriff’s office has reapplied for the grant after being denied last year.
