New Hanover County unemployment numbers better than average
The nation’s unemployment rate reached a four year high in July.
And while the unemployment rate in North Carolina hit 6.2 percent, New Hanover County comes in below the national average.
The State Employment Security Commission says Wilmington manages to stay below national unemployment numbers due to the diversity of the job market.
From larger corporations like Verizon and PPD to smaller seasonal positions like tour guides and ferry rides.
The ESC says the best way to find a job is to vary your approach.
Walter Biggs, Employment Security Comission, said, “Use your public employment service, use your internet, use the newspaper, use the word of mouth, and any other types of media you can to find out where the openings are.”
The ESC says that it is not unusual to see a rise in unemployment during the summer months. Recent college graduates entering the work force add to the numbers of unemployed. However, seasonal jobs in New Hanover help keep the overall number down.
