New Hanover Regional Medical Center goes on lockdown Tuesday night
New Hanover Regional Medical Center went on lockdown Tuesday night after a bloodied robbery suspect barged into the emergency room.
Wilmington Police said it all began with an attempted robbery at a clothing store on South 17th Street just before 7:00 p.m. The clerk shot the suspect police said is Shamel McCallum. They said McCallum got himself to the hospital, where he threatened workers. That is when the hospital went on lockdown and police moved in.
McCallum barricaded himself in a bathroom before surrendering. He underwent treatment for an apparent gunshot wound to his leg with police standing guard. He is now in the New Hanover County Jail under $100,000 bond charged with attempted robbery.
McCallum was recently released from state prison.
