New Hanover Sheriff demotes spokesman

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A corporal with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has been demoted following a criminal complaint. Charles Smith, the former public information officer, is now working in the Detention Division.

The Sheriff couldn’t tell us the nature of the investigation, but said he asked the SBI to look in to the complaint. Then, state investigators found no criminal charges. A subsequent internal investigation resulted in Deputy Smith’s demotion. Deputy Smith is in the process of resigning to pursue a career outside of law enforcement.
