Newborn girl found dead in garbage truck update

HUBERT — Investigators in eastern North Carolina say they have a person of interest in the death of a newborn girl whose decomposed body was found in a garbage truck.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported Tuesday that the baby’s body was found Monday by an employee of the garbage service who was about to dump a trash can.

Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said the investigation is continuing.

County medical examiner Dr. Anuradha Arcot said the baby appeared to be full-term and there were no signs of abnormalities.

Onslow Memorial Hospital spokesman Tim Strickland said parents who don’t want a newborn can legally leave the infant within seven days of birth with an official at a hospital, health or social services department or law enforcement agency.
