Newport man dies after truck rear-ended off bridge
MOREHEAD CITY, NC (AP) — Police say they have charged the
driver of a car that rear-ended a pickup and sent it over the U.S.
70 bridge in Carteret County and into the Intracoastal Waterway.
Authorities say 63-year-old William Henry Knott Jr. of Newport
died in the wreck early Sunday morning.
Investigators say Knott’s truck was hit from behind by a car
driven by 22-year-old Aaron McGarva.
McGarva was taken into custody after being treated at the
hospital. He is charged with felony hit and run, misdemeanor death
by motor vehicle, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. It
wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.
Authorities say Knott’s truck crashed through a guardrail and
fell more than 30 feet into the Newport River
