NFL alum attends Turkey Bowl in honor of coach
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An NFL alum, as well as other football players, brought back a Thanksgiving tradition in honor a a coach and mentor.
The Turkey Bowl kicked off Thursday afternoon near Williston Middle School, in honor of Coach William Murphy. The teams raised money to go toward a scholarship in his name.
Former Buffalo Bills player Jay Ross took to the field in a new position, quarterback. He says he had to come out and support an event in the name of someone he looked up to as a kid.
“Growing up Coach William Murphy was one of my mentors. Him and Coach Mike Jacobs. So they kinda kept us in line growing up as kids. So I had to come out here and support it since I’m home,” Ross said.
On Friday and Saturday, additional events are scheduled to honor Coach Murphy at the YMCA. Those events are scheduled from noon until 3:00 p.m.
