SOUTHEASTERN NC (WWAY) – A newly released report scored hospitals on how safe they keep their patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center received a B.

According to a breakdown of the grade, their worst performance came during problems with surgery. That’s where New Hanover’s performance was below average in five of the seven categories. The categories ranged from ‘death from serious treatable complications’ to ‘accidental cuts and tears.’

New Hanover’s best performance was in their practices to prevent errors, coming in above average in all five categories.

Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center received an A.

Columbus Regional Healthcare System also received an A.

“The employees at CRHS work relentlessly each and every day to provide the safest care to our patients.  We are proud that these efforts are being nationally recognized by Leapfrog,” said John Young, Interim CEO, Columbus Regional.

Grades for Pender Memorial and Cape Fear Valley Bladen County Hospital were not available.

The report, released by The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization, analyzed 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to hospitals twice a year.
